Monk Fryston & Hillam Community Centre Play Area

The play area is well loved and well used and has come along way over the years  - along with the community centre - when you consider the area was a cherry orchard in the early 1970's.

While the community centre has seen significant capital investment over the years to significantly improve capacity and futureproof it by making the most of sustainability funding, the playground has attracted less funding. The significant efforts of previous volunteers have resulted in the replacement of some play apparatus and the introduction of new to increase the offering to the children in the area.

Whilst functional, some of the older pieces are over 30 years old now. Some pieces need replacing and others can cause slips and trips.

Our transformation aims to build on the success of the previous playground and make it a space that is fit for the next 30 years of use by our children.

Playground Transformation Proposal

The image below represents one of the proposals received for the playground transformation. Over the past couple of years, while discussing this transformation, we have been in dialogue with 3 companies. This proposal closely meets the initial brief.

Cherry Orchard

The initial site was a cherry orchard and we asked if this could be captured in the theme. We have avoided wooden features which have a reduced lifespan but green "nature" features have been included and "red cherries" added in the surface impact points

Playground Features

We have aimed to improve the overall feature offering, ensure there are age appropriate features for children likely to use the part and also include a selection of accessible features for any children with mobility issues.

We have added a number of sensory features and also increased the swing coverage.

Not shown on this graphic are an improved covered seating area and an improved access through the car park which are separate to this project but complementary in nature.

Funding

The proposal pictured above is £150,000 plus VAT.

The Community Association has commited £40,000 to supporting this transformation project.

Monk Fryston Parish Council have earmarked £40,000 for playground projects.
We hope to obtain a significant amount of that £40,000, and perhaps more.

We will be applying for additional funding from a number of sources such as:

  • Sport England Movement Fund
  • Hillam Parish Council
  • Monk Fryston Education Fund
  • Asda Communities Fund
  • Selby Community Foundation amongst others.

We will also look to leverage any of the Community Benefit funding available from the currently planned solar projects, should they go ahead.

Initial Consultation - Now Closed

We aim to ensure that the transformation meets the needs of the majority of potential users.
To that end, we produced a consultation survey that we wanted residents of the villages to review and feedback their views.

The survey had over 80 responses which represents approximately 10% of households across both villages.

We acknowledge that not everyone that could have responded, has responded. However, the volunteers involved have limited timescales in which to undertake the relevant tasks.
