A well-known supermarket’s motto is ‘Every little Helps’ and this is the approach the CA is using to continue its drive towards carbon neutrality. Alongside the removal of gas which is a source of uncontrolled CO2 emissions and with the support of the Lottery Fund, we have been installing a series of energy efficiency devices. We have tackled the problem which every house has …. turning off unnecessary or ‘forgotten’ lighting and replacing old fluorescent or other big lights with movement-controlled LED lighting. We know that no matter how many times we have asked Centre Users to turn off lights in areas which are not being used and no matter how well intentioned Community Centre users are … things don’t always happen… likewise volunteers and others in a rush have left lights switched on in little used areas such as the sheds, our loft or outside. Does this sound familiar?
We have decided to take control – so don’t be surprised if a light goes out if you are in a room at the Centre when you are in it and are sitting very still – you will simply have to move to relight the room.
To compliment the lighting work, we will be improving the insulation of the Community Centre by adding more insulation to areas identified as deficient by the Thermal Camera survey into the loft area and by replacing the large fire door exit to the shed area with a better insulated door. We hope all this work will be done by the end of the summer.
The Thermal Imaging Camera is owned by the CA and is available for residents to borrow to see how the insulation in their homes is performing and if /where there are gaps in insulation. Of all the potential investments to reduce carbon emissions, insulation is one of the most effective and certainly the one which carries the least financial investment risk.
It is widely recognised as a ‘no regrets’ action along with other home actions such as draught exclusion and replacing lights with LED fittings and bulbs.
